State Visit of Sultan of Oman Features Solemn Tribute to Martyrs, Official Welcome Ceremony, High-Level Talks, and the Signing of Landmark Agreements Across Multiple Sectors
Algiers, Algeria | May 5th, 2025 — In a momentous step towards enhancing strategic cooperation and fostering brotherly ties, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of the Sultanate of Oman presided on Monday over the official signing ceremony of a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two nations. The event, held at the Presidential Palace in Algiers, was a highlight of the Sultan’s two-day state visit to Algeria and reflects the shared vision of both leaders to solidify multifaceted bilateral relations.
The solemn and high-level event witnessed the signing of key agreements across various sectors including economy, energy, education, cultural exchange, and diplomatic collaboration. These agreements are expected to pave the way for deeper economic integration, institutional cooperation, and joint development projects between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, President Tebboune welcomed Sultan Haitham bin Tariq with full honors in a grand official ceremony at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic. As the motorcade of the Sultan entered the Presidential Palace, it was received by a cavalry guard of the Republican Guard who rendered a ceremonial salute in honor of the distinguished guest. The two leaders then stood side by side for an official photograph before national and international media, symbolizing the strength of Algerian-Omani friendship.
Following the welcoming ceremony, the two Heads of State held a private one-on-one meeting during which they reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and explored prospects for expanding cooperation in regional and international arenas. The private discussions were then extended to include high-ranking members of both delegations, during which strategic matters and avenues of mutual interest were thoroughly examined.
In a gesture that underscored the depth of the Sultan’s respect for Algeria’s historical sacrifices, Sultan Haitham began his visit with a solemn tribute to the martyrs of the Algerian War of Independence. On Monday morning, he laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial (Maqam Echahid) in Algiers and observed a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs of Algeria’s liberation struggle. The Sultan also recited Al-Fatiha, offering prayers for the souls of the fallen heroes.
Sultan Haitham bin Tariq had arrived in Algeria on Sunday, May 4, at the head of a high-level delegation comprising senior ministers and officials. Upon arrival at Houari Boumediene International Airport, he was warmly received by President Tebboune, signaling the start of a visit rich in symbolism and significance.
The state visit represents a renewed chapter in Algerian-Omani relations, rooted in shared values of sovereignty, Arab unity, and non-alignment. It also reflects a joint ambition to elevate cooperation to a comprehensive strategic partnership capable of confronting regional challenges and seizing emerging opportunities in a rapidly changing global order.
President Tebboune and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq expressed mutual satisfaction with the progress achieved and reiterated their commitment to sustaining high-level political dialogue, economic cooperation, and cultural connectivity. The signed MoUs, officials said, are not only administrative in nature but reflect a deep political will to transform bilateral ties into a model of inter-Arab partnership.
