In a gesture of high cultural significance, President Tebboune offers a prized Algerian Barbs stallion named “Hilal” to Sultan Haitham, symbolizing the deepening diplomatic and strategic ties between Algeria and Oman.
Algiers, Algeria | May 5th, 2025 — On Monday, May 5, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended a gesture of exceptional diplomatic and cultural symbolism by offering a purebred Algerian Barbs horse to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. This noble gift, made during the Sultan’s historic state visit to Algeria, reflects not only traditional Arab values of hospitality and honor but also a growing strategic partnership between the two nations.
The gifted horse, a magnificent grey stallion named Hilal, is three years old and stands 1.56 meters tall at the withers. A video released by the Algerian Presidency showcases the majestic animal in a well-kept enclosure, accompanied by attentive caretakers. The stallion’s elegance, noble bearing, and polished presentation were a testament to the respect and esteem Algeria holds for the Sultan of Oman.
The symbolic handover took place during Sultan Haitham’s two-day state visit, which concluded Monday evening. The Omani monarch arrived in Algiers on Sunday and was warmly received at Houari Boumediene International Airport by President Tebboune himself, in a ceremonial welcome that underscored the importance of the visit.
More than a symbolic act, the Sultan’s visit yielded tangible progress. The two nations signed 11 cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding, laying the foundation for closer collaboration across key sectors, including energy, mining, healthcare, agriculture, justice, higher education, labor, and joint investment.
Among the most notable outcomes of the visit was the creation of a joint investment fund, established between Algeria’s Ministry of Finance and Oman’s Investment Authority. This fund aims to bolster bilateral economic initiatives and serve as a catalyst for sustainable development projects benefiting both nations.
Sultan Haitham’s visit was the first of its kind in 52 years, making the occasion all the more historic. It reflected a shared desire to deepen not only political and economic ties but also cultural and civilizational bonds.
The offering of Hilal, a proud symbol of Algeria’s equestrian heritage and Maghreb identity, crowned this visit with profound meaning. In Arab culture, gifting a horse is a mark of great respect and signifies loyalty, bravery, and trust. For Algeria, it was also an affirmation of shared values with the Sultanate of Oman and a tribute to centuries-old traditions of Arab diplomacy.
