Taha Derbal Announces the Upcoming Launch of Five New Dams to Strengthen Algeria’s Water Security

Algiers – October 2025 – In a stride toward consolidating Algeria’s water sovereignty and ensuring long-term hydric stability, the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, has unveiled the near completion of five new dams that will soon be operational, marking a major milestone in the country’s hydraulic development strategy. With these projects, Algeria’s total storage capacity will reach approximately 8.9 billion cubic meters, a significant leap from the current 8.6 billion cubic meters provided by the nation’s 81 operational dams.
Speaking before the Finance and Budget Committee as part of the 2026 Finance Bill discussions, Derbal detailed the geographical deployment of these new infrastructures, located in Djedra (Souk Ahras), Sidi Khalifa and Souk Telata (Tizi Ouzou), Boukhroura (El Tarf), and Lazraq (Khenchela). The reception of these facilities, he confirmed, is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026.
The minister emphasized that this extensive program is further bolstered by over 600 hillside reservoirs and small dams, designed to optimize local water resource management and improve the resilience of rural and agricultural communities to climate variability.
In parallel, Derbal highlighted the impressive progress achieved in seawater desalination, noting that 18 desalination plants are now fully operational across the national territory, boasting a combined daily capacity of 3.75 million cubic meters. To this are added 13 compact units producing an additional 85,000 cubic meters per day, forming a critical component of Algeria’s diversified water strategy.
Thanks to these strategic efforts, the national potable water distribution network now extends over 185,000 kilometers, securing an exceptional 98% connection rate and guaranteeing a per capita daily supply of 180 liters.
On the sanitation front, Minister Derbal underscored the state’s massive investments in wastewater treatment, which currently encompass 234 treatment systems—including 113 purification stations and 121 natural treatment facilities—with a total processing capacity of 1.13 billion cubic meters per year, of which 600 million cubic meters are treated water suitable for reuse. As a result, the national sanitation connection rate has reached 93%, supported by an extensive network of nearly 97,400 kilometers.
Beyond urban supply, Derbal emphasized the crucial role of the hydraulic sector in supporting agricultural development, revealing that 70% of the water used for irrigation is now sourced through the integrated use of surface and underground resources. This, he affirmed, is a testament to the state’s unwavering commitment to guaranteeing both water and food security for present and future generations.
