Water Minister Derbal Announces Major Boost in Irrigation Quota for Mascara Amid Push for Sustainable Agricultural Growth

Algiers, Algeria | May 12th, 2025 — In a decisive move to reinforce Algeria’s agricultural sector and ensure sustainable resource management, Minister of Water Resources, Tahar Derbal, announced on Monday a substantial increase in the irrigation water quota for the wilaya of Mascara—from 6 million to 10 million cubic meters.

The announcement was made during a working and inspection visit to the region, with the minister kicking off his tour in the commune of Bouhanifia. During his first stop, Derbal was presented with a detailed and comprehensive briefing on the state of irrigation in the wilaya by Mascara’s Director of Water Resources.

The minister commended the efforts underway to enhance public water services and emphasized the urgent need to tighten water management, particularly through the repair of leakages and maintenance of distribution networks to preserve vital water reserves.

He stressed the importance of upgrading wastewater treatment infrastructure and promoting the reuse of treated wastewater in agricultural irrigation, as a critical step toward expanding cultivable land and achieving long-term agricultural sustainability.

Minister Derbal also called for the nationwide adoption of water-efficient irrigation technologies to ensure optimal use of available resources and to maximize the area of irrigated farmland.

As part of ongoing development programs, he urged the timely and technically compliant completion of water-related infrastructure projects. He specifically instructed that implementation efforts be accelerated ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, to meet seasonal demands and alleviate pressure on water supply systems.

Additionally, the minister called for the formulation of a clear roadmap and tailored programs to guarantee the smooth and uninterrupted delivery of potable water to citizens during the festive period.

In conclusion, Derbal reiterated the state’s firm commitment to delivering quality public services in the fields of drinking water and sanitation, aligned with citizens’ expectations and in support of regional development goals.
