El Djeïch Pays Tribute to Former President Liamine Zéroual, Highlighting a Legacy of Statecraft and National Fidelity
By Dr. Hana Saada
In its April 2026 issue (No. 753), El Djeïch devotes its editorial to the memory of former President and moudjahid Liamine Zéroual, under the title: “Men pass, but their traces remain”—a formulation that sets the tone for a reflection less on loss than on continuity.
The publication revisits the trajectory of a figure whose career straddled the foundational phases of the Algerian state, presenting him as emblematic of a generation shaped by struggle and defined by institutional responsibility. It argues, in essence, that such profiles are neither incidental nor exhausted, but embedded within a broader national tradition of service and loyalty.
Zéroual’s funeral, held on 28 March 2026, unfolded in a markedly solemn atmosphere, attended by Abdelmadjid Tebboune, senior state officials, former companions-in-arms, and large crowds. The ceremony, as portrayed by the review, was not merely commemorative; it functioned as a reaffirmation of collective memory and institutional continuity.
Born into the crucible of the independence struggle, Zéroual joined the National Liberation Army at the age of 16. The editorial situates this early engagement as the foundation of a lifelong commitment to the state, one that extended beyond independence into a career marked by senior military, diplomatic, and political responsibilities, culminating in his tenure as President of the Republic during one of Algeria’s most turbulent periods.
His presidency is framed not in expansive political terms, but through the lens of restraint and stabilisation. Faced with acute security challenges, Zéroual is portrayed as a leader whose measured approach and sense of duty contributed to restoring a degree of institutional equilibrium at a critical juncture in the country’s trajectory.
The editorial places particular emphasis on the moral architecture of his legacy—integrity, discipline, humility, and an unyielding attachment to national unity. Quoting President Tebboune, it recalls a figure described as “upright, deeply nationalist, and close to the people, particularly the most modest among them,” reinforcing a narrative of proximity between leadership and citizenry.
Beyond commemoration, the text shifts toward a broader reflection on present conditions. Against a backdrop of regional and international uncertainty, it underscores the necessity of reinforcing internal cohesion and mobilising national capacities around shared priorities. The message is clear: unity is not rhetorical, but strategic.
Within this framework, the role of the People’s National Army is reaffirmed as central to the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Chief of Staff, Saïd Chanegriha, is cited as expressing confidence in the institution’s capacity to confront emerging challenges while accompanying national development efforts.
The concluding note returns to continuity. Algeria, the editorial argues, remains capable of producing figures of similar calibre—anchored in history, yet oriented toward the future. The trajectory outlined is one of steady progression: a state drawing on its past not as a refuge, but as a resource for navigating an increasingly complex environment.
