The President Rushes from the Airport to the Hospital to Comfort the Victims of the Orphanage Fire… When the Greatness of the State Resides in President Tebboune’s Heart

ALGIERS – In the annals of global politics, the prestige of the state is often reduced to rigid protocol, grand motorcades, and the carefully maintained distance separating the leader from his people. In Algeria, however, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has redefined that very notion of prestige, transforming it from an expression of detached authority into one of human closeness. Today, the Presidency lives in rhythm with the heartbeat of the nation—not only in moments of collective celebration, but equally in times of grief, tragedy, and sorrow.

The greatness of nations is measured by the closeness of their leaders to their people, and in Algeria, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has embodied this principle both in word and in deed. He has made the concerns of Algerians his foremost priority, transforming both their joys and their hardships into matters of national importance, because he is a man who believes that the strength of the state lies not only in its institutions, but also in its steadfast commitment to stand beside every Algerian. Thus, the entire machinery of the state is mobilized in service of the citizen, for serving the people is not merely a slogan to be proclaimed, but a covenant, a responsibility, and a sacred national duty.

The scene of the President visiting the victims of the fire at the Mohammadia Child Care Institution immediately upon his return from his medical trip was not a mere protocol gesture intended to absorb public anger or polish an image. Rather, it was the embodiment of the philosophy of “servant leadership.” Whoever looked into the President’s eyes could see the tears welling up in sorrow at what he had witnessed, and whoever listened to his remarks could sense the anguish in his heart as he spoke of the tragic news he had received while away from his homeland. He is a man possessed of a compassionate heart, one that is deeply moved by such devastating tragedies.

When the president sets aside the burdens of governance to sit beside an injured young woman, comforting her with paternal words filled with reassurance—“Do not worry at all. You will return to how you were before. The Algerian State will take care of everything, including any reconstructive surgery you may need.”—he is no longer practising politics; he is practising national fatherhood. In that moment, the expressions of hope reflected on the faces of the children spoke louder than words: hope for recovery, and confidence that they would not be abandoned in the midst of their ordeal. We pray that Almighty God grants them a swift recovery, heals their wounded hearts, and eases their suffering.

What distinguishes this approach is the mobilisation of the state through all its institutions. Here, the President does not confine himself to heartfelt sympathy; rather, he translates that compassion into immediate executive action: psychological support, the provision of every available resource, and comprehensive care. He addressed the medical teams with unmistakable clarity: “We are placing every available resource at your disposal. Whatever you need, we will provide,” so as to guarantee the best possible care for the children. This signifies that, in the New Algeria, responsibility is no longer confined to an official seated behind a desk; it has become an immediate response to every citizen confronted by hardship.

President Tebboune has succeeded in creating a decisive break with the era of an “isolated presidency.” Prestige, in his view, is not derived from elevation or aloofness, but from the ability to reach the very heart of society and elevate it. It is a presidency founded upon proximity, one that allows every Algerian to feel that the state—with all its weight and authority—exists for his or her sake, offering protection and healing wounds.

The equation of the “servant president” is not a slogan designed for political posturing; it is a continually renewed covenant. The man who moves swiftly to stand beside orphaned children in a child care institution is the very same man who shoulders the burdens of sovereignty and national security. Therein lies true greatness: in the ability to combine the management of the state’s most consequential affairs with an attentive concern for the smallest human details that touch the lives of individual citizens.

In the final analysis, history will continue to bear witness that only those rulers who draw close to the suffering of their peoples earn an enduring place in the conscience of nations. Algeria today, under the leadership of President Tebboune, affirms that the Presidency is not an ivory tower, but a great home that gathers all the sons and daughters of the nation beneath its shelter—a leadership that regards public office as a solemn responsibility, service to the people as an enduring mission, and the dignity of every Algerian as a red line that must never be crossed.
