Algeria moves to tighten diaspora engagement as Chaib meets community in Barcelona

Algeria’s Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, held talks in Barcelona on Wednesday with members of the Algerian diaspora, in a meeting aimed at strengthening ties and accelerating the modernisation of consular services, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
The session, held during a working visit to Spain, brought together representatives of Algerian associations in the Barcelona consular district, alongside the Algerian ambassador to Spain and the consul general. It served as a structured exchange on administrative, educational and cultural concerns raised by expatriates, with a focus on improving direct communication between citizens abroad and state institutions.
Chaib highlighted the “particular attention” accorded by Algeria’s leadership to its overseas community, outlining ongoing reforms to upgrade consular services and expand support mechanisms, particularly in education, training and cultural programming targeting younger generations.
Participants expressed appreciation for the sustained state engagement and welcomed the visit as part of efforts to reinforce institutional dialogue with the diaspora.
The meeting forms part of Algeria’s broader strategy to modernise its consular network and strengthen political, social and cultural links with its expatriate population.
