Equitable Water Distribution and National Supply Expansion Prioritized, Says Bouzegza
Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s Minister of Hydraulics, Lounès Bouzegza, has underscored the need to ensure an equitable distribution of drinking water across all regions of the country, describing access to water as a “top priority” for public authorities, according to remarks made in Tipasa on Tuesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a working visit focused on water distribution ahead of Eid al-Adha, Bouzegza said improving public service delivery remains a central policy objective, stressing the importance of equal access to potable water nationwide.
The minister highlighted what he described as “comfortable” national water reserves, attributing the situation to heavy rainfall this year that led to the full filling of 20 dams and an improvement in groundwater levels. He also pointed to state-led investment programmes designed to meet rising demand.
Bouzegza reiterated presidential directives to construct five seawater desalination plants, each with a capacity of 300,000 cubic metres per day, noting that the programme has since been expanded to 19 plants with a combined capacity of 3.6 million cubic metres per day.
He further referred to an emergency supplementary plan involving six additional desalination facilities by 2030, which would increase total production capacity to an estimated 5.6 million cubic metres per day of desalinated seawater.
The minister also cited an emergency presidential programme aimed at strengthening access to drinking water through the drilling of 900 artesian wells in water-stressed regions, with deliveries expected to begin in June.
Bouzegza stressed the need for demand management, warning against waste, leakage and illegal connections to distribution networks, while urging stricter control mechanisms to safeguard infrastructure efficiency.
