Algeria Reshapes African Order from South Africa, Disrupts Makhzen’s Politics of Patronage Buying
The elevation of Algeria’s candidate, Fateh Boutbig, to the presidency of the African Parliament with 118 votes in Midrand, South Africa, was neither a routine electoral outcome nor a mere ceremonial rotation of institutional offices. Rather, it amounted to a continental referendum on Algeria’s diplomatic doctrine—one that has re-centred African political consciousness around a vocabulary of principles, parity, and reputational integrity; values that cannot be acquired through opaque briefcases or bargained in the concealed corridors of backroom dealings.
Algeria: the compass of continental orientation
Through this decisive diplomatic victory, whose institutional horizon extends to 2029, Algeria—under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune—reaffirms that its return to African Union dynamics is not a rhetorical construct for media consumption, but a coherent strategic course aimed at restoring the credibility and authority of continental institutions, after years marked, as asserted, by attempts at infiltration and distortion attributed to the Moroccan Makhzen system and its external alignments.
Across its five regions, Africa has delivered its verdict: “Yes to Algeria”—not only in recognition of historical stature, but in acknowledgment of a trusted partner advancing a genuinely African agenda, one that resists the subordination of continental legislative sovereignty to external geopolitical calculations.
The unmasking of a discredited diplomatic practice
On the opposing side, the Moroccan Makhzen, as observed in Midrand, is described as having displayed its most diminished form of diplomatic conduct. When its candidate, former minister Lahcen Haddad, came face to face with the procedural transparency of the electoral process, the apparatus resorted, in this account, to its familiar arsenal: obstruction, pressure tactics, and verbal intimidation.
The use by the Moroccan delegation of offensive language against Secretariat staff, alongside attempts to intimidate participating delegations to the point of requiring security intervention to restore order, reflects a deeper erosion in diplomatic comportment. What is presented as diplomacy is reduced here to disruptive volatility, culminating in a clear electoral setback, with Morocco exiting the North African contest without institutional standing or political capital.
Midrand: the collapse of constructed narratives
Attempts to destabilise the plenary atmosphere through misinformation and pressure targeting the Secretary-General of the Parliament ultimately failed. The African response was unequivocal: the 118 votes in favour of Algeria represented a categorical rejection of the idea that continental outcomes can be shaped through financial inducement or improvised political manipulation.
Within this framework, Africa is seen as having recalibrated its judgment when confronted with Algeria in a transparent democratic contest. While Algeria consolidated bonds of trust across the continent through a discourse rooted in development and collective security, other actors pursued manufactured allegiances that ultimately collapsed under the weight of electoral reality.
Algeria’s accession to the presidency of the African Parliament thus stands as the expression of a state unwavering in its principles. It sends a clear message to any actor seeking to undermine continental cohesion: Algeria is present—safeguarding institutional continuity, preserving legacy, and contributing to a more sovereign African decision-making order.
In Midrand, façades were dismantled. Algeria emerges affirmed—disciplined in representation, consistent in trajectory, and resolute in posture. Africa, once again, finds its bearings through a compass it considers reliable.
