UGTA Chief: President Tebboune Has Surpassed Workers’ Expectations
By Dr. Hana Saada
UGTA Secretary-General Amar Takdjout on Saturday underscored the scale of socio-professional gains achieved under the leadership of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, affirming that workers’ expectations have not only been met but exceeded.
Speaking at the headquarters of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) in Algiers, in the presence of the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security and the Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs, Takdjout reviewed the principal social and economic measures implemented over the past five years on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.
“The President of the Republic has responded positively to workers’ demands. He has given us more than we asked for,” he said, highlighting successive wage increases and a range of social measures benefiting workers, including targeted support for working women.
Retirees have also benefited from recent reforms, with pensions and allowances increased by 10 percent for those up to 20,000 dinars and 5 percent for higher brackets. The measure, affecting more than 3.5 million retirees and backed by an annual allocation of 88 billion dinars, came into force this Saturday.
Takdjout also pointed to the broader economic trajectory, noting that ongoing reforms and major projects in sectors such as mining, water resources and renewable energy require substantial financial investment while generating long-term benefits for workers and future generations.
While noting a clear improvement in social conditions, he stressed the need to reassess approaches to work. He recalled that May 1, established in 1886 in the United States, marks both the celebration of workers and the recognition of labour, rooted in historic trade union struggles for the eight-hour workday.
Referring to the message addressed by President Tebboune to workers on this occasion, Takdjout emphasised the call to renew trade union engagement in the spirit of figures such as Aïssat Idir. “We must rethink our approach and fully re-engage in trade union activism. What distinguishes unions is, above all, their history,” he said, urging stronger commitment among union members.
“It is time for the union to return to the militant legacy of its predecessors—figures such as Aïssat Idir and Abdelhak Benhamouda, who made profound sacrifices for the country,” he added, stressing adherence to republican principles and the rule of law. “The Republic is a red line.”
Takdjout reaffirmed the UGTA’s commitment to establishing a permanent and constructive framework for social dialogue, describing it as essential. He also announced that a bipartite meeting between the UGTA and employers’ organisations—including the Algerian Economic Renewal Council and the National Union of Public Entrepreneurs—is scheduled to take place before June 1.
