Prime Minister Reviews Care for Boumerdes Crash Victims as State Mobilises Full Emergency Response
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb inspected hospitals treating survivors of the Boumerdes bus disaster as Algeria intensified its nationwide emergency response, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordering full state support for victims, a judicial investigation into the crash, and three days of national mourning following one of the country’s deadliest road tragedies in recent years.

ALGIERS — Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited hospitals in Algiers and Boumerdes on Friday evening to assess the medical treatment provided to survivors of Algeria’s deadliest road accident in recent years, as authorities intensified a nationwide emergency response following the bus crash that has claimed 27 lives and injured 42 others.
Acting on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Prime Minister travelled first to Mustapha Pacha University Hospital in Algiers before continuing to Boumerdes Hospital, where he received detailed briefings from medical teams on the condition of the injured and the measures deployed to ensure their treatment.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, Health Minister Mohamed Sadek Aït Messaoudène and Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Soraya Mouloudji, reflecting the government’s coordinated response to the national tragedy.
During the visits, Ghrieb met injured passengers and spoke with their relatives, while also extending his condolences directly to the families of those who lost their lives.
He reaffirmed that the Algerian state had mobilised all available human, medical and logistical resources to ensure comprehensive care for the victims, stressing that public authorities would continue to provide every form of assistance required throughout the recovery process.
The tragedy unfolded Friday morning when a passenger bus carrying holidaymakers from El Eulma, in Sétif province, veered off the road before plunging into a ravine near Berrahmoun El Karma, on the outskirts of Boumerdes. The victims were travelling to the Seghirate beach for a summer excursion.
Civil Protection authorities have since confirmed that the death toll has risen to 27 fatalities, while 42 people remain injured, making it one of Algeria’s most devastating road accidents in recent years.
The government has mounted a broad emergency operation involving Civil Protection units, medical personnel and local authorities. Severely injured victims were transferred to specialised hospitals in Algiers, including Mustapha Pacha, Salim Zemirli and Mohamed Lamine Debaghine hospitals, to receive advanced treatment.
President Tebboune described the tragedy as the work of what he called “road terrorists,” warning that those found responsible would face the full force of the law once judicial investigations establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The president also declared three days of national mourning, ordered flags to fly at half-mast across the country and instructed all relevant institutions to provide full support to victims and their families.
Meanwhile, the National Gendarmerie has opened a judicial investigation into the causes of the accident, while Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud has confirmed that all necessary investigative procedures are underway to determine responsibility.
Alongside the official response, Algeria has witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of public solidarity. Thousands of citizens have rushed to hospitals and blood donation centres to support the injured, while the Algerian Red Crescent has deployed volunteers to assist families, provide psychological support and coordinate humanitarian assistance. Authorities have also made public accommodation facilities available to host relatives travelling from Sétif and other regions as they accompany victims during the crisis.
