Nationwide Solidarity Mobilises for Boumerdes Bus Tragedy as Blood Donation Campaigns Intensify

Hundreds of Algerians have flocked to hospitals and blood donation centres following the Boumerdes bus disaster, as a nationwide wave of solidarity complements the state’s emergency response led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, amid continuing efforts to care for the injured and support victims’ families.

ALGIERS – A nationwide wave of solidarity has swept across Algeria following the devastating bus crash in Boumerdes, with hundreds of citizens rushing to hospitals, healthcare facilities and blood donation centres to support survivors of one of the country’s deadliest road tragedies in recent years.

The spontaneous mobilisation comes after the passenger bus veered off the road, overturned and plunged into a ravine in the Berrahmoune El Karma area of Boumerdes province. According to the latest official figures released by the Civil Protection authorities, the disaster has claimed 27 lives and left 42 people injured, several of them in critical condition.

In response to urgent appeals from medical authorities, large numbers of volunteers gathered at hospitals receiving the injured, as well as blood collection centres, including the Corso centre in Boumerdes, patiently queuing to donate blood to reinforce emergency medical stocks.

Medical specialists note that victims of severe road accidents frequently suffer massive haemorrhaging requiring immediate transfusions. A single critically injured patient may require dozens of blood units during surgery and intensive care, while blood products have a limited shelf life, making continuous public donations essential for maintaining hospital reserves during major emergencies.

The surge in donations has unfolded alongside a broader national emergency response coordinated by the Algerian authorities. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared a three-day national mourning period, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and pledged that those found responsible would face strict legal accountability once the inquiry is completed.

Acting on the President’s instructions, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb travelled to Boumerdes before visiting injured survivors in hospitals in Boumerdes and Algiers, where he reviewed medical care and called on transport operators to recognise that passengers’ lives are “a trust placed in their hands.”

Interior, Local Assemblies and Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud, who also travelled to the disaster area, confirmed that security services had launched an investigation into the causes of the accident while mobilising all available state resources to guarantee comprehensive medical treatment for the injured. He also announced that several seriously injured victims had been transferred to specialised hospitals in the capital.

The Algerian Red Crescent has meanwhile deployed volunteers to receive and accompany victims’ families, provide psychological first aid and participate in blood donation campaigns, reinforcing the humanitarian response coordinated with health authorities and emergency services.

The outpouring of public support reflects a recurring pattern of national solidarity witnessed during previous crises, including the recent wildfires that affected several Algerian provinces. Once again, citizens have responded immediately to a national tragedy, illustrating the strong social cohesion that continues to characterise Algeria’s collective response in times of hardship, as communities, civil society organisations and state institutions unite to assist victims and their families.
