ALGIERS – Following the deadly bus accident in Boumerdes that claimed at least 25 lives and left 44 others injured, Algeria’s highest authorities have intensified both their emergency response and their call for greater road safety, as the government pledged accountability and comprehensive support for victims.

During a visit to Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Bab El Oued, Algiers, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, inspected the condition of survivors transferred from Boumerdes and praised the medical teams involved in the emergency response.

Addressing professional drivers and transport operators, Ghrieb delivered a strong public appeal urging strict compliance with traffic regulations and heightened vigilance behind the wheel.

“The lives of passengers are a trust placed in your hands,” the Prime Minister said, stressing that safeguarding human life must remain the foremost responsibility of every driver.

The visit followed Friday’s tragic accident, in which a passenger bus veered off the road, overturned and plunged into a ravine along the Berrahmoun El-Karma bypass on the outskirts of Boumerdes, resulting in one of Algeria’s deadliest road disasters in recent years.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, who travelled to Boumerdes to oversee the government’s response on the ground, confirmed that security authorities had opened a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

Sayoud said all state resources had been mobilised to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured, who are receiving treatment in hospitals across Boumerdes and Algiers, including Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital, Mustapha Pacha University Hospital and Salim Zemirli Hospital.

The minister also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting those affected by the tragedy.

Earlier, President Tebboune expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and pledged that justice would “strike with an iron fist” against anyone found responsible once the official investigation establishes the circumstances of the accident.

In response to the national tragedy, the President declared three days of national mourning, ordering flags to be flown at half-mast across the country.
