Boumerdes Bus Tragedy Death Toll Rises to 27 as Rescue Operations Conclude
The death toll from the devastating bus crash in Algeria’s Boumerdes province has risen to 27, while 42 people remain injured, according to updated figures released by the Civil Protection authorities, as emergency services completed rescue operations and continued medical evacuations.

ALGIERS – The death toll from the catastrophic bus crash in Algeria’s Boumerdes province has risen to 27, while 42 people were injured, according to the latest official update released by the Civil Protection authorities, marking a further increase in casualties from one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent years.
Civil Protection said its emergency teams responded immediately after the passenger bus veered off the road, overturned and plunged into a ravine, deploying extensive rescue resources to evacuate victims and provide emergency medical assistance.
All injured passengers were transported to hospitals across the region for treatment, while the bodies of the victims were transferred to local morgues following the completion of recovery operations, the statement said.
The emergency response involved significant human and logistical resources, including three rescue trucks, 11 ambulances, and an additional 20 support ambulances deployed by the National Training and Intervention Unit to reinforce rescue and evacuation efforts.
The updated casualty figures come as Algeria continues nationwide mourning following the tragedy. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared a three-day national mourning period, ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and pledged that those found responsible would face strict legal accountability.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on the President’s instructions, travelled to Boumerdes and later visited injured survivors receiving treatment in hospitals, while Interior, Local Assemblies and Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud confirmed that security services had launched an investigation and that all available state resources had been mobilised to ensure comprehensive medical care for the victims.
Authorities have not yet released the findings of the ongoing investigation into the causes of the accident.
