Algeria Launches Final Preparations for 2026–2027 School Year Ahead of September Reopening
Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui chaired a national conference bringing together education directors and senior officials to review final preparations for the upcoming school year, focusing on infrastructure readiness, textbook availability, school catering and the implementation of curriculum reforms.

ALGIERS – Algeria’s Ministry of National Education has launched the final phase of preparations for the 2026–2027 academic year, as Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui convened a national conference on Saturday to assess the sector’s readiness ahead of the official reopening of schools on 6 September.
Held at the ministry’s headquarters, the meeting brought together education directors from across the country alongside senior ministry officials to review operational, logistical and pedagogical arrangements aimed at ensuring a smooth start to the new school year.
The conference focused on the progress of renovation works in educational establishments requiring rehabilitation, the operational readiness of school canteens and the nationwide availability of textbooks, all considered key priorities ahead of the reopening of schools.
The minister also reviewed the implementation of the education reforms announced earlier this week as part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the national education system.
Among the most significant curriculum changes scheduled to take effect from the 2026–2027 school year is the postponement of French-language instruction to the fourth year of primary education, replacing the previous timeline under which pupils began studying the language earlier in their schooling.
Saadaoui also confirmed the introduction of computer science into the curriculum for second-year and final-year secondary students enrolled in the mathematics and mechanical engineering streams, formerly known as technical mathematics, as part of broader efforts to strengthen scientific and technological education.
The conference further addressed the ongoing national recruitment campaign for teachers. The minister instructed education authorities to expedite the completion of recruitment procedures by accelerating the publication of both written and oral examination results, allowing newly recruited teachers to assume their duties before the start of the academic year.
The meeting forms part of the ministry’s nationwide coordination efforts to ensure that educational institutions, teaching staff and administrative services are fully prepared for the return of millions of pupils, while supporting the rollout of the latest reforms designed to improve educational quality and strengthen students’ scientific, linguistic and digital competencies.
