ALGIERS — The Algerian Red Crescent (ARC) has stepped up its humanitarian response to the victims of the Boumerdes bus tragedy by providing hospitals with all essential supplies required for the treatment and care of survivors, as nationwide relief efforts continue following the devastating accident.
The humanitarian organisation said on Saturday that it had supplied all necessary medical and humanitarian essentials for injured passengers receiving treatment at Mustapha Pacha University Hospital and the Salim Zemirli Specialized Hospital in Algiers.
The operation was carried out in coordination with the management of both healthcare institutions after the Algerian Red Crescent’s medical committee conducted a comprehensive assessment of the immediate needs of the injured patients.
According to the organisation, the initiative forms part of its broader humanitarian mission to ensure that survivors receive the support and assistance required throughout their recovery while easing the burden on healthcare facilities managing the aftermath of the tragedy.
The latest intervention builds on a wider national solidarity campaign that has unfolded since the passenger bus plunged into a ravine near Berrahmoun El Karma in Boumerdes on Friday, claiming 28 lives and injuring 41 others, according to the latest official figures released by the Civil Protection authorities.
Following the disaster, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning, ordered a comprehensive judicial investigation into the causes of the crash and instructed all state institutions to mobilise every available resource to support victims and their families.
Acting on the President’s instructions, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited hospitals in Boumerdes and Algiers to review the medical care being provided to survivors, accompanied by Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, Health Minister Mohamed Essadik Aït Messaouden, and Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Soraya Mouloudji.
Meanwhile, the Algerian Red Crescent has continued deploying volunteers across hospitals and reception centres to welcome victims’ relatives, provide psychological first aid, coordinate humanitarian assistance and participate in nationwide blood donation campaigns launched to support critically injured patients.
The organisation’s latest initiative reflects the broader mobilisation of Algerian public institutions, emergency services, healthcare workers and civil society, whose coordinated efforts have underscored the country’s strong tradition of national solidarity in responding to major humanitarian emergencies.
