ALGIERS – Algeria has secured several key positions and memberships within African Union (AU) institutions and mechanisms, reinforcing its diplomatic standing within the continental organisation and underscoring the influence of its engagement across Africa.

As part of the latest appointments, Mohamed Khaled, Algeria’s ambassador and permanent representative to the African Union, was elected to chair the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREP) responsible for human rights, democracy and governance.

In addition to this appointment, Algeria was elected as a member of the Ministerial Committee on African Candidatures within the international system and the Ministerial Follow-up Committee on the implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Algeria also secured membership of the Committee of Permanent Representatives responsible for environmental issues, the Specialised Technical Committee on Youth, Culture and Sports, the Specialised Technical Committee on Transport and Communications, and the Continental Operational Centre for Combating Irregular Migration based in Khartoum, Sudan.

The appointments further strengthen Algeria’s presence within the African Union’s institutional framework and expand its role in shaping policies related to governance, sustainable development, regional integration and migration management.

The development reflects the confidence placed in Algerian diplomacy by African partners and highlights the country’s continued engagement in promoting peace, development and continental integration.

Through its participation in these mechanisms, Algeria is expected to contribute more actively to the formulation and implementation of African policies aimed at advancing the shared interests of the continent’s peoples.
