Moroccan MP Accuses Government of “Social State Propaganda” and Parliamentary Votes Against Consumer Protection

ALGIERS – With electoral milestones approaching, what critics describe as the political façade of Morocco’s governing establishment is beginning to show increasing strain, as accusations mount over the gap between official social-policy rhetoric and parliamentary voting records on consumer-related legislation.

In this context, Fatima Tamni, a Member of Parliament from the Federation of the Democratic Left, sharply criticised recent public engagements by members of the government, describing them as an early electoral campaign and a form of political marketing built on what she termed the “commodification of public hardship.” Her remarks highlighted what she sees as a widening contradiction between polished official messaging and deteriorating living conditions.

Tamni singled out the recent field visits and public appearances of several ministers, including Housing Minister Fatima Zahra Mansouri and Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka, arguing that these initiatives amount to political communication exercises rather than substantive policy responses to ongoing social pressures. In a strongly worded statement shared on her social media account, she questioned: “What dignity are government ministers speaking of? And what financial balances are these that burn citizens’ purchasing power and consume everything in their path?”

According to the MP, the concept of “citizen dignity,” frequently invoked in official discourse, has been reduced to a repetitive slogan in media appearances, while failing to translate into tangible measures capable of protecting households from persistent inflation and rising prices of essential goods.

Tamni further criticised what she described as a structural contradiction in government practice, arguing that while the executive promotes the narrative of a “social state,” its parliamentary majority has repeatedly voted against legislative proposals aimed at easing the burden on citizens and curbing speculation and price increases.

She highlighted key distortions in the current policy approach, including institutional tolerance of monopolistic practices and speculative behaviour, and the absence of effective protections for wage earners and pensioners facing sustained cost-of-living pressures.

The remarks triggered wide debate on social media, where users echoed criticism of government policy, linking rising living costs to broader governance choices and accusing political elites of prioritising influential economic interests over household purchasing power.

One widely shared comment stated that official discourse on “dignity” contrasts sharply with parliamentary decisions perceived as failing to protect basic consumer welfare, arguing that such inconsistencies undermine public trust and political credibility.

Tamni concluded her remarks by calling on the governing coalition to end what she described as the political exploitation of social grievances and the justification of economic hardship under the pretext of maintaining macroeconomic balances. She stressed that dignity, in her view, cannot be achieved through rhetoric, but only through concrete alignment with citizens’ demands for social justice and purchasing power protection.
