Algiers Court: Suspect Remanded After Armed Robberies Targeting Shop Owners in Birkhadem

The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Bir Mourad Raïs Tribunal in Algiers issued a press statement on Sunday, under Article 19 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, informing the public of developments in a case involving a series of armed robberies targeting shop owners in the municipality of Birkhadem.
According to the statement, the case was triggered by a complaint filed with the gendarmerie services in Birkhadem by several shop owners, reporting that they had been robbed of their daily revenues in full view of customers, by an individual armed with a bladed weapon. The incidents reportedly occurred on the same day and in succession.
The statement added that video footage from surveillance cameras circulating on social media showed an individual identified as Saidani Souhil entering the shops while carrying a large knife, which he brandished against victims in order to steal money and assault them.
Following these events, the prosecution ordered the immediate opening of a rapid investigation and the arrest of the suspect, who was subsequently apprehended by gendarmerie units in Birkhadem shortly after the incidents.
On 21 June 2026, the suspect was presented before the Public Prosecutor’s Office and referred for immediate trial proceedings on charges including theft with violence in a state of recidivism, intentional assault and battery with a bladed weapon, and death threats, under Articles 350 bis, 54 bis 3, 266, 284 and 285 of the Penal Code.
After appearing in tribunal, the case was adjourned to 28 June 2026, with the defendant placed in pre-trial detention pending further proceedings.
