Algiers, Algeria | October 13th, 2024 — Algeria has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing digital transformation, with over 1.5 million households now connected to high-speed internet via Fiber to the Home (FTTH), according to a recent statement from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. This development is part of a broader governmental effort to accelerate digitalization and follows directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to expand fiber-optic technology nationwide.
The exponential growth in FTTH connections reflects Algeria’s commitment to improving internet access for its citizens. Since the beginning of 2020, the number of connected households has surged from a modest 53,000 to one million by November 2023, and now, by early October 2024, this number has surpassed 1.5 million across the country.
This substantial quantitative leap is coupled with qualitative improvements, notably in the bandwidth provided to subscribers. The ministry highlighted that Algérie Télécom is offering high-speed internet plans, with speeds reaching up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) on demand. These developments mark a decisive shift towards making cutting-edge technology accessible to more homes, with faster internet speeds increasingly becoming a reality.
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications emphasized that this success extends beyond just the numbers. The program to generalize fiber-optic technology continues to reach households previously lacking fixed internet connections, particularly in newly developed urban centers and neighborhoods. In addition, existing copper-based networks are being gradually upgraded, transitioning subscribers from the older DSL technology to the more advanced FTTH system.
In parallel, the number of total households with access to fixed internet has seen an impressive rise, jumping from 3.5 million at the start of 2020 to 5.8 million as of October 2024. As the fiber network expands, speeds of up to 300 Mbps have become available, accompanied by reductions in the costs of higher-tier plans, making faster connections more affordable for a wider audience.
To drive awareness and encourage the adoption of this next-generation technology, Algérie Télécom has undertaken a comprehensive outreach campaign. The initiative has focused on engaging citizens, particularly in emerging urban zones, to demonstrate the benefits of fiber-optic internet and ease the transition to this advanced service.
Algeria’s leap forward in digital infrastructure aligns with its broader goal of fostering a more connected, innovative society. As the country continues to modernize its telecommunications framework, the expansion of fiber-optic internet promises to play a crucial role in enhancing both economic and social development.
