Algeria’s Amar Bendjama Endorsed by African Group for Presidency of UN Economic and Social Council
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS / UNITED NATIONS — The African Group at the United Nations has unanimously endorsed Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, as its candidate for the presidency of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in a move that underscores Africa’s coordinated approach to leadership positions within the multilateral system.
The decision was adopted on Thursday during a meeting of African permanent representatives in New York, chaired by Malawi’s Permanent Representative in her capacity as chair of the African Group.
Bendjama is expected to assume the presidency of ECOSOC for the July 2026–July 2027 term, subject to formal election by the Council’s member states during a meeting scheduled for 23 July 2026.
The unanimous endorsement reflects the established practice within the United Nations regional groups of presenting consensus candidates for senior positions across the organisation’s principal bodies and subsidiary organs.
As one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, the Economic and Social Council serves as the central platform for coordinating the organisation’s work on economic, social, and sustainable development issues. ECOSOC oversees a broad network of subsidiary bodies and commissions and plays a key role in advancing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Council also facilitates dialogue among member states, UN agencies, international financial institutions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders on global challenges ranging from poverty reduction and social inclusion to climate action, financing for development, and digital transformation.
If formally elected, Bendjama would become one of the latest African diplomats to lead a major UN body at a time when African member states are seeking greater representation and influence within global governance institutions.
Algeria has consistently advocated for strengthened multilateralism, expanded representation of developing countries within international institutions, and enhanced cooperation on issues related to sustainable development, economic equity, and international peace and security.
