GECF Secretary General Begins Working Visit To Algeria To Boost Gas Cooperation And Energy Dialogue
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – The Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Philip Mshelbila, has begun a working visit to Algeria from 20 to 23 June 2026, accompanied by a delegation from the organisation, as part of efforts to strengthen coordination on global gas market developments and energy sector cooperation.
The visit is aimed at deepening consultation between Algeria and the GECF on key issues including natural gas market trends, the future of the gas industry, supply security challenges, investment dynamics, and energy transition pathways, as well as enhancing scientific and technical cooperation among member states.
During the visit, the GECF Secretary General is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior Algerian officials, including Minister of State for Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, to discuss ways of reinforcing cooperation frameworks and advancing joint initiatives in research, innovation, and knowledge exchange.
The programme also includes a visit to the Gas Research Institute (GRI), affiliated with the GECF and headquartered in Algiers. The institute, inaugurated on 29 February 2024 on the sidelines of the forum’s seventh summit, serves as a specialised research platform dedicated to advancing natural gas innovation and fostering collaboration between research centres and energy stakeholders across member countries.
In addition, the delegation is expected to visit Sonatrach’s gas transport network monitoring and control centre, allowing them to observe Algeria’s operational systems for managing gas infrastructure and advanced surveillance technologies.
The visit underscores Algeria’s role within the GECF framework and its continued engagement in promoting dialogue and cooperation among member states, with the aim of supporting stability in global gas markets and enhancing the contribution of natural gas to sustainable economic and social development.
The GECF brings together some of the world’s leading gas-exporting countries and seeks to promote sovereign rights over natural gas resources while encouraging dialogue between producers and consumers to ensure long-term market stability and balanced supply and demand.
