France Signals Need for Historical Reckoning in Sétif Commemoration Remarks

By Dr. Hana Saada

French Minister Delegate for the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Alice Rufo, has stated that “courage is required to face history as it truly unfolded,” during her participation in the commemorative ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of the 8 May 1945 massacres in Sétif, in eastern Algeria.

Her remarks were delivered on Friday in the presence of the French Ambassador to Algeria, during a solemn ceremony that included the laying of a wreath at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the events that unfolded in Sétif, Guelma, and Kherrata, where thousands of Algerians were killed during colonial-era repression following demonstrations demanding independence.

Rufo emphasised the importance of engaging with historical memory “in a spirit of respect for Algeria’s memory,” in a formulation that reflects the continued sensitivity surrounding one of the most traumatic episodes of French colonial rule in North Africa.

The commemoration formed part of the “March of Memory and Loyalty,” organised in Sétif as part of Algeria’s National Day of Remembrance, which annually revisits the massacres of 8 May 1945. On that day, peaceful demonstrations coinciding with the end of the Second World War and calling for Algerian independence were met with violent suppression by French colonial forces.

The Sétif massacres, alongside subsequent killings in Guelma and Kherrata, remain a defining historical rupture in Algerian collective memory and continue to shape the political and diplomatic contours of Algerian-French relations.

While successive French administrations have taken incremental steps toward acknowledging aspects of the colonial past, the question of full historical reckoning remains politically sensitive in France, where interpretations of colonial history continue to be contested within public and institutional discourse.

Rufo’s remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Algiers and Paris to manage historical grievances alongside contemporary strategic interests, including migration, security cooperation, and economic ties. The language of “courage” and “historical truth,” while not unprecedented in Franco-Algerian dialogue, signals a continued attempt to frame memory as a shared but unresolved diplomatic file.

For Algeria, the commemoration of 8 May 1945 massacres remains central to national identity formation and postcolonial historical consciousness, reinforcing demands for recognition of colonial-era crimes within a broader framework of historical justice.
