U.S. diplomatic visit to Western Sahara triggers Polisario warning over legal status of territory
BY Dr. Hana Saada
The Polisario Front has condemned a visit by the U.S. ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III, to the city of Dakhla in Western Sahara, describing it as a violation of the territory’s legal status, which it considers subject to a UN-led decolonisation process.
In a statement relayed by the Sahrawi foreign ministry, the Front warned that the visit “does not help create conditions for ongoing UN and U.S.-backed negotiations” and risks undermining trust in the peace process.
It reiterated that the 1991 ceasefire agreement is no longer in effect following its breach in November 2020, and reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination under UN resolutions.
The Polisario also argued that its continued cooperation with international mediation efforts has been based on good faith, while criticising a shift in U.S. conduct that could encourage further regional escalation.
It further noted that recent developments, including renewed military activity, reflect the absence of a functioning ceasefire framework, and called on international actors to ensure accountability and preserve conditions for a negotiated settlement.
The statement also invoked past UN General Assembly resolutions reaffirming the principle of self-determination for colonial territories, framing the dispute as an unresolved decolonisation case under international law.
