Algeria Orders Memory Push With Forum, Draft Law Marking 8 May 1945 Anniversary

BY Dr. Hana Saada

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune directed the Ministry of Moudjahidine and War Veterans to launch national memory forums and prepare draft legislation on national memory, in a presidential message marking the 81st anniversary of the 8 May 1945 massacres.

The directive covers two measures: nationwide forums on history and memory, and a legal framework to institutionalise national memory tied to the independence struggle.

Tebboune highlighted ongoing commemorative and educational initiatives across universities, schools and youth institutions aimed at preserving historical narrative and countering collective amnesia.

The statement coincided with the National Day of Memory, with reaffirmed state commitment to safeguarding the legacy of the 8 May 1945 victims and the broader liberation struggle.
