Saudi Daily Okaz Praises Algerian Security Services’ Expertise in Release of German Hostage
Saudi newspaper highlights the professionalism, intelligence capabilities and discreet mediation efforts that enabled Algeria to secure the release of a German businessman abducted by an armed group in Niger

ALGIERS — The recent operation that led to the release of a German businessman of Turkish origin, Sinan Ulumaskan, held hostage by an armed group in Niger has continued to draw international attention, with Saudi daily Okaz praising the professionalism and operational capabilities of Algeria’s People’s National Army (ANP) and its security and intelligence services.
In a report published on August 10, the Saudi newspaper described the operation as one of the most complex and high-risk security missions carried out in the heart of the African Sahara, highlighting Algeria’s ability to navigate the region’s challenging security environment while prioritising the hostage’s safety.
The businessman had travelled to Niger to finalise a commercial agreement related to gold and mining exploration when he was abducted by an armed group operating in the Sahel. According to Okaz, the kidnappers subsequently demanded a substantial ransom for his release.
Algeria steps in as hostage crisis escalates
Against this backdrop, Algerian security and intelligence services became involved in efforts to secure the hostage’s release and ultimately succeeded in bringing him safely to Algeria.
Okaz attributed the success of the operation to the Algerian services’ longstanding experience in hostage-related operations, as well as their detailed understanding of the region’s complex security environment.
The newspaper said Algerian authorities proceeded with particular caution, relying on discreet communication and mediation channels while seeking to minimise any potential risk to the hostage.
The operation involved intensive negotiations alongside carefully coordinated security measures. The hostage was eventually released and transferred into Algerian territory through the In Guezzam border crossing before being taken under escort to Boufarik military airport.
The sequence brought an end to his captivity and enabled Algerian authorities to ensure his safe transfer before his return to Germany.
Regional expertise and discreet diplomacy
Beyond the operational dimension, Okaz presented the episode as an illustration of Algeria’s accumulated expertise in managing complex security crises in the Sahel and Sahara.
The Saudi daily particularly highlighted what it described as Algeria’s ability to combine security capabilities, regional knowledge, discreet channels of communication and mediation in circumstances where a direct intervention could have placed the hostage at greater risk.
The newspaper ultimately credited Algeria’s regional networks and operational mechanisms with allowing the authorities to manage the hostage crisis with considerable skill and secure his release under safe conditions.
The episode also comes against the backdrop of Algeria’s longstanding position against the payment of ransoms to terrorist and criminal groups, alongside its advocacy of dialogue and mediation as instruments for resolving regional crises.
For Algiers, the successful release therefore extends beyond a single hostage case, underscoring the country’s continued security and diplomatic engagement in the Sahel and its stated commitment to protecting human life while combating terrorism, kidnapping and organised crime.
