ALGIERS — Algeria’s state energy group Sonatrach and Niger’s national oil company Sonidep have completed their first joint marketing operation for Nigerien crude, marking a new phase in the two countries’ expanding commercial and energy partnership.

The first cargo of “Meleck” crude was loaded on Friday, August 14, at the Sèmè oil terminal in Benin, according to a statement from Sonatrach.

The operation forms part of Algeria’s efforts to deepen commercial relations with Niger and follows directives from the country’s senior authorities to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with its southern neighbour.

Sonatrach described the shipment as a further step in implementing cooperation with Sonidep in the marketing of hydrocarbons, extending the relationship between the two companies beyond technical and upstream activities into the commercialisation of Nigerien crude.

A broader African strategy

The joint sale also forms part of Sonatrach’s wider strategy to expand its presence across Africa and deploy its accumulated expertise in hydrocarbon marketing in support of African partners.

The Algerian group said the operation reflected its willingness to make its experience and specialised know-how in hydrocarbon marketing available to its African counterparts, while creating new avenues for commercial and economic cooperation.

For Sonatrach and Sonidep, the joint marketing of Meleck crude is intended to reinforce the momentum in Algeria-Niger relations and establish sustainable partnerships capable of generating mutually beneficial opportunities.

The shipment therefore represents more than a single commercial transaction: it provides a practical expression of the two countries’ stated ambition to broaden their energy cooperation and develop economic partnerships grounded in shared interests.

The operation also gives Sonatrach a more visible role in the commercialisation of Nigerien hydrocarbons, adding a new dimension to Algeria’s growing engagement with African energy markets.
