Sport Diplomacy: African Olympic Association Honors Cape Verde’s President with African Recognition Medal
By Dr. Hana Saada
The African National Olympic Committees Association, under the leadership of Mustapha Berraf, has formally awarded the President of Cape Verde, José Maria Pereira Neves, the African Solidarity and Recognition Medal, in recognition of his sustained and continuous support for both national and continental sporting development.
The ceremony took place in the presence of a high-level delegation from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, alongside Filomena Fortes, President of the Cape Verdean Olympic Committee. The event coincided with the inauguration of the committee’s new headquarters, as well as the convening of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee on Sal Island—an occurrence regarded as a historic first at the level of African Olympic governance.
In his remarks on the occasion, Mustapha Berraf, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, commended Cape Verde’s sporting model, emphasising that this distinction reflects continental recognition of leaderships that place sport at the heart of development-oriented priorities.
For his part, the President of Cape Verde, José Maria Pereira Neves, expressed his appreciation for this continental distinction, highlighting the pivotal and strategic role played by international sporting institutions in supporting infrastructure development projects and in reinforcing capacity-building programmes across the various islands of the archipelago. He further affirmed that sport remains an effective and powerful instrument for strengthening solidarity and fostering closer ties between peoples.
The African National Olympic Committees Association, as the continental umbrella organisation for national Olympic committees across Africa, continues to work towards the consolidation of Olympic values, the enhancement of sporting expertise, and the contribution to sustainable development through sport as a structured mechanism.
