Tebboune Says Health Security Depends on Sustainable Investment in Healthcare Systems
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that strengthening health security in Africa requires sustained investment in healthcare systems, enhanced surveillance capacities and increased support for scientific research.
In a statement delivered on his behalf by Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene during a high-level African Union meeting on the spread of the Ebola virus, held via videoconference, the president stressed that building a more resilient and health-secure Africa extends beyond crisis response.
“Building a safer Africa in terms of health security does not begin only when crises emerge, but through sustainable investment in healthcare systems, strengthening surveillance and early warning capacities, developing qualified human resources, and supporting scientific research as well as local production of healthcare products and vaccines,” the statement said.
Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s readiness to provide technical assistance to African countries through the Ministry of Health and the National Health Security Agency, alongside its financial contribution to continental efforts aimed at addressing health risks.
He said Algeria stands ready to share its expertise and experience with fellow African countries in support of collective efforts to enhance the continent’s capacity to respond to health emergencies.
The president added that Algeria is continuing to strengthen its national health security system and develop its capacities for prevention and rapid response to public health emergencies.
The African Union high-level meeting on the spread of the Ebola virus was held in Addis Ababa under the chairmanship of Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, current chairperson of the African Union, with the participation of African leaders, international partners, United Nations agencies and regional organisations.
