The Polisario Front Rejects Any Process Aimed at Legitimizing the Moroccan Occupation of Western Sahara

✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers – November 2025 – In a firm declaration, the Polisario Front, the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, has announced that it will not take part in any process intended to legitimize the illegal Moroccan military occupation of Western Sahara. The statement follows the adoption by the United Nations Security Council on Friday of Resolution 2797 (2025), which extends the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until October 31, 2026.

Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and sovereignty, the Polisario Front denounced all attempts to distort or circumvent the decolonization nature of the Western Sahara question.

At the same time, the movement reiterated its willingness to engage constructively in a genuine peace process under UN auspices, grounded in international legality. It recalled having submitted, on October 20, 2025, an expanded proposal to the UN Secretary-General, demonstrating its sincere commitment to a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles enshrined in Resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly and subsequent Security Council resolutions.

The Front also recalled that its earlier initiative, presented to the UN Secretary-General on April 10, 2007, had been examined by the Council in its Resolution 1754 (2007), confirming its continuous adherence to dialogue within the framework of international law.

The Polisario Front welcomed aspects of the latest resolution that reaffirm the Security Council’s continued engagement toward a fair and durable solution consistent with the UN Charter and its principles. Resolution 2797 reiterates that the final settlement must be mutually acceptable and must guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, as stipulated in numerous UN texts defining Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, not a territorial dispute.

However, the Front expressed deep concern over “certain elements of the resolution” which, it warned, constitute “a very dangerous and unprecedented deviation” from the principles of the UN Charter and from the legal framework underpinning the UN peace process in Western Sahara. These provisions, according to the statement, undermine the international legal status of the territory, jeopardize the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, and threaten to erode the credibility of the United Nations’ peace mission in one of Africa’s longest-standing conflicts.

The statement stressed that the resolution does not effectively address the core issues raised by the majority of Security Council members and by the Polisario Front itself, both in its letter to the President of the Security Council on October 23, 2025, and during its bilateral consultations with the text’s drafters and other concerned parties.

The Polisario Front emphasized its exclusive legitimacy as the representative of the Sahrawi people, who in recent days have demonstrated across the world to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to their right to independence, dignity, and sovereignty — and to defend these rights through all legitimate means recognized by international law.

The declaration warned that unilateral approaches, motivated by short-term political opportunism and seeking to impose faits accomplis, would only deepen the conflict and destabilize the entire region. “Sacrificing the principles of law, justice, and peace to serve fleeting geopolitical agendas,” the Front declared, “will not bring stability, but rather push North Africa toward greater insecurity and confrontation.”
