Air Algérie Charters Special Aircraft as Algeria Depart for United States World Cup Campaign
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s national football team will depart for the United States on Sunday aboard a specially chartered Air Algérie Airbus A330neo as preparations intensify for the country’s participation in the FIFA World Cup.
The aircraft, named El-Fennec, has been redesigned in Algeria’s national colours and carries the iconic slogan, “One, Two, Three, Viva l’Algérie!”, a chant synonymous with Algerian football supporters around the world. The initiative was undertaken by Air Algérie, the official carrier of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), as part of efforts to showcase the national team’s identity on the international stage.
The direct transatlantic flight will transport the delegation to Kansas City, eliminating stopovers and reducing travel fatigue ahead of a demanding tournament schedule. Upon arrival, the squad will establish its base camp at Rock Chalk Park, a modern sports complex equipped with training facilities and infrastructure designed to support elite-level preparation throughout the opening phase of the competition.
The departure follows Algeria’s notable 1–0 victory over the Netherlands in Rotterdam last week, a result that provided a significant boost to confidence ahead of the World Cup. After a recovery period, head coach Vladimir Petković resumed preparations with his squad at the National Technical Centre in Sidi Moussa, focusing on the team’s final warm-up fixture against Bolivia, scheduled for 10 June in Kansas City.
Although Bolivia failed to qualify for the World Cup, the South American side is regarded as a valuable test opponent, offering Algeria an opportunity to refine tactical options and provide competitive minutes to a broader section of the squad before the tournament begins.
Petković has also received a major boost with the return of midfielder Hicham Boudaoui, who has recovered from a head injury sustained during OGC Nice’s play-off encounter against AS Saint-Étienne. His return strengthens Algeria’s midfield options and increases competition for starting places.
With defender Ramy Bensebaïni also available, the Algerian coach now has a full squad at his disposal as preparations enter their final phase. Attention is increasingly turning toward Algeria’s World Cup opener against reigning world champions Argentina on 17 June, a fixture that will mark the beginning of the Greens’ quest on football’s biggest stage.
