Minister of Communication Calls for Neutral Media Coverage as Legislative Candidates Sign Electoral Ethics Charter in Algiers

By Dr. Hana Saada

Candidates and representatives of political parties and independent lists competing in Algeria’s legislative elections scheduled for 2 July have formally signed an Electoral Ethics Charter on Saturday at the International Conference Center (CIC), following the draw determining media allocation slots for campaign coverage.

The signing ceremony marks a key procedural step ahead of the official launch of the electoral campaign, which is set to begin on 9 June and run for 23 days. The charter commits all participants to the principles of fair competition, regulatory compliance, and adherence to the rules governing electoral communication.

The initiative aims to ensure a disciplined and transparent campaign environment, reinforcing equal treatment among candidates and promoting ethical standards throughout the electoral process.

In parallel, the Minister of Communication urged media institutions to maintain strict neutrality in their coverage of the upcoming campaign. Speaking on the sidelines of the draw for airtime allocations on major broadcast platforms, the minister stressed the importance of professional and objective reporting, free from distortion or undue influence.

He called on journalists to cover campaign activities—including rallies, grassroots visits, and political meetings—with rigor and responsibility, emphasizing the need for verification of information prior to publication or broadcast. The objective, he noted, is to ensure that voters are able to make informed decisions without manipulation or bias.

The minister further underscored the importance of avoiding any editorial conduct that could influence the outcome of the vote, reiterating the central role of media neutrality in safeguarding electoral integrity.

The campaign period will officially run from 9 June until 23 days later, concluding with a mandatory silence period in the days immediately preceding the vote.

The coordinated measures reflect ongoing efforts to structure Algeria’s electoral process in line with institutional transparency, ethical governance, and regulated political competition.
