Algeria Launches 2026 Baccalaureate Examinations for More Than 876,000 Candidates
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s 2026 Baccalaureate examinations officially begin on Sunday, with 876,171 candidates sitting for the country’s most significant secondary-school assessment across 2,973 examination centres nationwide.
Minister of National Education Mohamed Seghir Sadaoui is scheduled to launch the examination session from Tizi Ouzou, overseeing a nationwide operation involving 588,631 school candidates and 287,540 independent candidates. The session also includes 6,100 inmates taking the examination in 47 specially designated correctional facilities.
To manage the process, authorities have mobilised an extensive administrative apparatus comprising 227,278 personnel, including 183,709 invigilators, 2,973 observers, and more than 29,000 administrative staff. An additional 52,044 personnel have been assigned to marking centres, among them 48,304 examiners responsible for correcting scripts.
The Ministry of National Education has reinforced anti-cheating measures, reiterating a strict prohibition on mobile phones and all electronic communication devices for both candidates and examination staff. Authorities have also activated surveillance systems and monitoring mechanisms aimed at preventing the dissemination of examination materials through social media platforms.
The security framework is supported by Algeria’s Law 20-06 on the protection of examination integrity. Under the legislation, examination-related offences are punishable by prison terms ranging from one to three years and fines of up to 300,000 dinars. Penalties increase substantially in cases involving organised fraud, digital communication technologies, or the participation of officials entrusted with examination administration, reaching up to ten years’ imprisonment and fines of one million dinars. Offences resulting in the cancellation of examinations may be prosecuted as serious crimes carrying prison terms of between seven and fifteen years.
As part of new organisational measures introduced this year, examination centres will open at 7:15 a.m. to facilitate candidate access, while afternoon sessions will begin at 1:45 p.m. The examinations will run from 7 to 11 June and cover all academic streams, including Literature and Philosophy, Foreign Languages, Arts, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Mathematics, and Management and Economics.
Alongside security arrangements, authorities have implemented comprehensive psychological and pedagogical support mechanisms to help students manage examination-related stress. Religious Affairs authorities have authorised the opening of nearby mosques and Quranic schools as study and rest spaces, while youth centres across the country have been made available to candidates. The National Taxi Transport Union has also committed to providing free transportation for candidates living in remote areas.
Education officials have sought to reassure students that examination papers will be drawn exclusively from officially taught curricula completed during the academic year. The ministry has urged candidates to disregard rumours and misinformation circulating on social media, emphasising that disciplined preparation, self-confidence, careful reading of questions, and effective time management remain the key determinants of success.
The scale of the nationwide mobilisation once again underscores the central place of the Baccalaureate within Algeria’s educational system and reflects the authorities’ commitment to ensuring equal examination conditions and opportunities for candidates across the country.
