ALGIERS — Algeria on Thursday laid to rest the victims of the fire that swept through the Mohammadia Children’s Assistance Centre in Algiers, as senior state officials continued to oversee emergency relief efforts and extend condolences following one of the country’s deadliest institutional fires in recent years.

Acting on instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, accompanied by members of the government, attended the funeral ceremony held at Sidi Rzine Cemetery in Baraki, Algiers, where the victims of the tragedy were buried.

The fire broke out before dawn on Thursday at the children’s care facility in Mohammadia, claiming the lives of 11 children and leaving 19 others injured, according to the latest official toll.

Earlier in the day, Ghrieb visited survivors receiving treatment at the Zeralda Burns Hospital and the Mustapha Pacha University Hospital, where he was briefed on their medical condition and the care being provided.

Speaking to the media during those visits, the Prime Minister said all necessary instructions had been issued to ensure comprehensive medical treatment and support for the injured.

On behalf of President Tebboune and the government, Ghrieb also conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, praying for God’s mercy upon those who lost their lives and wishing the injured a swift recovery.

He was accompanied by Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa, Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Aït Messaoudene, and Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Soraya Mouloudji.

Earlier, President Tebboune issued a message of condolence expressing profound sorrow over the tragedy, describing the deceased as “children of Algeria” and offering prayers for the victims while wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

The President’s message came a day after Algeria marked National Children’s Day, adding to the emotional weight of the tragedy.

During his official visit to Germany, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also extended his condolences to President Tebboune and the Algerian people during a joint press conference in Berlin, expressing sympathy following news of the fire.

Civil Protection authorities said emergency teams intervened shortly after 3:30 a.m. to contain the blaze at the Mohammadia facility. The authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire, while emergency services continue to monitor the condition of those injured.
