Algeria Intensifies Field Monitoring to Safeguard Drinking-Water Supplies Across Provinces

Governors step up oversight of distribution networks, accelerate water infrastructure projects and address supply disruptions as authorities seek to improve service reliability

By Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS — Algerian provincial authorities have stepped up field monitoring of drinking-water supplies across the country as part of efforts to ensure service continuity, address distribution shortfalls and respond to concerns raised by residents.

The intensified monitoring follows instructions from the country’s senior authorities and Interior, Local Assemblies and Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud, with governors conducting on-the-ground assessments of water-distribution programmes and identifying areas experiencing shortages or supply fluctuations.

Focus on networks and water infrastructure

Field inspections include assessments of distribution networks, water facilities and infrastructure, alongside monitoring of so-called black spots and areas affected by irregular supply.

Authorities have also instructed relevant services to accelerate the completion of ongoing projects, particularly those involving the construction and equipment of wells, reservoirs and other water infrastructure, while stressing compliance with contractual deadlines and the rapid commissioning of completed facilities.

Technical teams are continuing to address problems affecting water supply, including low pressure and reduced flow, while repair campaigns are being carried out to tackle leaks and damaged sections of distribution networks.

The measures are intended to recover lost water volumes, improve the efficiency of distribution systems and reduce fluctuations in supply.

The nationwide effort forms part of the governors’ continuing field-level oversight of public services and the implementation of government directives, with particular emphasis on improving access to drinking water and responding to citizens’ concerns.
