Algeria Signs Italian, Chinese Contracts for First Phase of Integrated Phosphate Project
Sonatrach and Algerian Fertilizers Company award engineering and construction contracts to Saipem and China Harbour Engineering Company for an integrated industrial and port complex

ALGIERS — Algeria has signed two engineering and construction contracts with Italian and Chinese companies as part of the first phase of its Integrated Phosphate Project, marking a further step towards developing a large-scale domestic phosphate fertiliser industry.
The contracts were signed on Wednesday at the headquarters of Sonatrach between Sonatrach and the Algerian Fertilizers Company (AFC) on one side, and Italy’s Saipem and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) on the other.
The signing ceremony was attended by members of the Algerian government, Sonatrach chief executive Noureddine Daoudi, and the ambassadors of Italy and China to Algeria, alongside representatives of the companies involved.
Industrial complex and port infrastructure
The first phase includes the construction of an integrated industrial complex at Oued Keberit in Souk Ahras province, with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes of phosphate fertilisers and 570,000 tonnes of nitrogen fertilisers, in addition to other intermediate products.
The project also includes the development of port facilities in Annaba, creating an integrated industrial and logistics system designed to support production and improve operational efficiency.
The contracts bring together Algerian, Italian and Chinese companies around a project aimed at strengthening Algeria’s phosphate processing capacity and developing a more integrated industrial value chain.
