Algeria, Middle East Green Initiative Explore Enhanced Cooperation on Sustainable Development and Climate Action

Algeria and the Middle East Green Initiative discussed expanding cooperation on sustainable development and climate action, while reviewing preparations for Algeria’s assumption of the Initiative’s Ministerial Council presidency in 2027 and reaffirming the importance of regional coordination to address desertification, land degradation and drought.
ALGIERS — Algeria and the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) have explored avenues to deepen cooperation on sustainable development and climate action, as the country prepares to assume the presidency of the Initiative’s Ministerial Council in 2027.
The discussions took place on Tuesday during a meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Turki, Secretary-General of the Middle East Green Initiative, who is undertaking a working visit to Algeria.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on reviewing opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Algeria and the Initiative in priority areas consistent with Algeria’s vision for sustainable development and efforts to address climate change, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The two officials also discussed preparations for Algeria’s forthcoming presidency of the Initiative’s Ministerial Council during the 2027 mandate, highlighting the country’s anticipated role in advancing regional environmental cooperation and coordinating collective action on climate-related challenges.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of strengthening regional collaboration to confront the environmental threats facing the Middle East and North Africa, particularly desertification, land degradation and recurrent drought, which continue to pose significant risks to sustainable development, food security and water resources across the region.
