August 4 – People’s National Army Day: The Impregnable Bastion of Sovereignty and the Nation’s Eternal Shield

ALGIERS – In the history of great nations, there are milestones that time cannot erase because they constitute the fundamental coordinates of a state’s identity and continuity. August 4 stands among those enduring landmarks in Algeria’s national consciousness, commemorating a long legacy of sacrifice while embodying a nation’s loyalty to its steadfast shield and the enduring heir to its liberation force: the People’s National Army (PNA), the worthy heir to the National Liberation Army (ALN).

The choice of August 4 was far from arbitrary. It was the product of a sovereign initiative and a historic decision by President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who signed a presidential decree designating the date as the National Day of the People’s National Army.

The occasion commemorates a defining moment in the construction of the independent Algerian state: the transformation of the National Liberation Army into the People’s National Army, marking the transition from the victorious War of Liberation to the equally vital battle of nation-building, development, and the consolidation of national sovereignty. President Tebboune intended this day to serve as a badge of honour worn by military personnel and as an official and societal expression of gratitude to the martyrs of the Glorious Revolution, the martyrs of national duty, severely wounded veterans of the fight against terrorism, and every soldier standing guard along the nation’s frontiers.

Throughout the decades, the People’s National Army has never been merely a military institution tasked with deterring external aggression. Rather, it has been the solid rock against which every conspiracy and every failed attempt to undermine Algeria has shattered. From the formidable challenge of state-building amid scarce resources after independence, through the years of national ordeal when it confronted blind terrorism with exceptional courage to preserve the Republic and its constitutional order, to the present era in which it has attained advanced levels of operational readiness, professionalism, and technological deterrence, the Army has consistently demonstrated that it is the nation’s true lifeblood.

In this context, the principles underpinning the military institution have been clearly articulated by Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, during commemorations of this national occasion, when he stressed:

“The National Day of the People’s National Army will forever remain a badge of honour worn proudly by the sons and daughters of the military institution, and a testament to the strong bond uniting them with all components of our heroic people. It is that eternal and sacred bond which has always constituted the guarantor of Algeria’s security and the rock upon which every despicable attempt targeting our nation is crushed.”

He has also highlighted the humanitarian dimension and the military leadership’s enduring loyalty to those who served the nation, repeatedly affirming that the immense sacrifices made by wounded servicemen, injured members of the People’s National Army, and the valiant veterans of Algeria’s struggles constitute “the price of security and sovereignty and the pledge of everlasting glory,” adding that the Algerian state “can never forget those who offered their bodies and their lives so that Algeria might remain proud and unyielding.”

The source of Algeria’s resilience lies in what may be described as an enduring trinity: the people, the Army, and the leadership. It is this unique cohesion that has frustrated new-generation warfare, destabilisation schemes, and the hybrid socio-economic and psychological threats conceived in the shadows.

On August 4, we pay tribute with profound respect and gratitude to every officer, non-commissioned officer, soldier, and civilian employee serving within the ranks of the People’s National Army as they continue to safeguard Algeria’s borders, protect its national territory, and preserve the precious trust bequeathed by the nation’s righteous martyrs.

To them we offer our sincere prayers and wish them Almighty Allah’s highest reward. With the steadfast support of its valiant Army, Algeria shall continue to stand proud and resolute—building its future with unwavering determination and remaining a fortress of unbreakable strength.
