Algeria’s National Police to Expand Technology-Driven Traffic Enforcement to Improve Road Safety

Algeria’s General Directorate of National Security is moving toward technology-assisted traffic enforcement as part of a broader strategy combining prevention, deterrence and stricter legal enforcement to reduce road fatalities, a senior police official said, highlighting the growing role of intelligent surveillance systems in combating dangerous driving behaviour.
ALGIERS — Algeria’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) is preparing to strengthen road traffic enforcement through the wider deployment of advanced technologies, complementing conventional policing with intelligent monitoring systems aimed at reducing traffic accidents and improving road safety, a senior police official said.
Speaking during a special programme broadcast by Algerian Radio, Police Divisional Commissioner Rabah Zouaoui, representing the DGSN, said the country’s road safety strategy is increasingly built on an integrated approach that combines prevention, enforcement and deterrence while taking advantage of emerging digital technologies.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to combat road accidents through stricter implementation of traffic legislation and enhanced field inspections conducted jointly by the National Police and the National Gendarmerie, which continue to carry out both routine and unannounced roadside operations to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Zouaoui stressed that improving road safety requires addressing the interaction of three principal factors: human behaviour, vehicle condition and the quality of road infrastructure.
He identified excessive speeding as one of the deadliest causes of road accidents in Algeria, noting that it significantly increases the likelihood of dangerous overtaking manoeuvres while amplifying the severity of collisions.
While public awareness campaigns remain essential, the senior police official argued that education alone cannot effectively curb reckless driving without sustained enforcement.
“Awareness campaigns are indispensable, but they must be supported by a permanent security presence on the ground and the rigorous application of legal sanctions,” he said.
According to Zouaoui, the future of traffic policing lies in integrating digital technologies into everyday enforcement operations, enabling authorities to monitor violations continuously rather than relying exclusively on the physical presence of officers.
He explained that surveillance cameras and intelligent traffic monitoring systems are capable of detecting offences even after they have been committed, thereby strengthening the deterrent effect of enforcement measures and improving accountability among road users.
The adoption of technology-supported monitoring is expected to play a particularly important role in combating high-risk driving behaviours, including driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances, which remain among the most serious threats to road safety.
Zouaoui further emphasized that effective enforcement depends not only on technological capabilities but also on maintaining inspection operations that are regular, highly visible and unpredictable, making it more difficult for offenders to evade detection.
The planned expansion of intelligent traffic control reflects Algeria’s wider efforts to modernize public security services through digital transformation while enhancing the effectiveness of road safety policies aimed at reducing accidents, protecting lives and strengthening compliance with traffic legislation.
