Algeria Mobilises Provincial Governors to Accelerate Strategic Grain Harvest Under Tebboune’s Directives
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers — Algeria has launched an extensive nationwide mobilisation to accelerate the grain harvest campaign, with provincial governors deploying emergency field measures under directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to safeguard strategic agricultural production and strengthen national food security.
The initiative follows a coordination meeting chaired by Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, held on 30 June, during which authorities reviewed obstacles affecting the harvest and threshing campaign and agreed on a series of operational measures to improve efficiency across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior, governors have begun implementing emergency field operations in all provinces, activating monitoring cells and mobilising logistical resources to ensure the smooth collection and protection of agricultural output.
The measures include intensified field inspections, close supervision of harvesting operations and the immediate resolution of issues raised by farmers, alongside the deployment of all available human and material resources to support the campaign.
To optimise harvesting capacity, provincial authorities have also launched a strategic redistribution plan for agricultural machinery. Harvesters and other farming equipment are being transferred from provinces that have already completed their harvests to those where operations are still underway, allowing resources to be deployed where they are needed most.
In parallel, authorities are making use of surplus grain storage capacity in neighbouring provinces to relieve pressure on regions approaching the limits of their storage infrastructure, ensuring that harvested crops can be collected and preserved without disruption.
The Interior Ministry said the unprecedented nationwide coordination reflects a policy of inter-provincial solidarity and integrated resource management, maximising the use of Algeria’s transport, storage and agricultural capacities.
The government considers the initiative a key component of its broader strategy to secure strategic agricultural production, improve harvest efficiency and reinforce national food security by ensuring the rapid collection, transportation and storage of this year’s grain harvest.
