GENEVA – Patriotism, cultural pride and a strong sense of belonging defined celebrations organised by Algeria’s Consulate General in Geneva as nearly 600 members of the Algerian community gathered to commemorate the 64th anniversary of Independence Day and Youth Day, transforming the Swiss city into a vibrant showcase of Algerian identity.
Held on the evening of 4–5 July, the event attracted Algerian families from across Switzerland, with particularly strong participation from young people, underscoring the enduring bond between successive generations of the diaspora and their homeland.
Addressing attendees, the Consul General stressed the importance of making the Independence Day celebration a lasting annual tradition through which Algerians renew their commitment to the legacy of the nation’s martyrs while transmitting the values of the Revolution to younger generations.
He also highlighted the attention devoted by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the Algerian community abroad, describing the diaspora as an integral component of the nation and a strategic extension of Algeria beyond its borders.
The celebration featured an exhibition highlighting Algeria’s traditional craftsmanship, cultural heritage and artisanal expertise, providing visitors with an opportunity to discover the richness and diversity of the country’s historical identity.
A musical performance by Algerian artist Manal Gharbi added to the festive atmosphere before the evening concluded with a fireworks display accompanied by patriotic songs, ululations and chants of “Long Live Algeria,” echoing across Geneva.
“Algeria Is More Than Football—It Is a Nation with History”
Beyond the official programme, the event was marked by emotional testimonies from members of the Algerian community, many of whom described the celebration as an opportunity to reaffirm their attachment to their homeland despite living thousands of kilometres away.
One participant said the celebration demonstrated that Algeria “is not just football or sport—it is an entire history,” adding that the country’s historical legacy continues to inspire Algerians both at home and abroad.
Another attendee said he hoped to introduce Algeria’s culture and civilisation to people of different nationalities in Switzerland so they could discover “everything this country represents.”
Praise for Consular Efforts
Several participants commended the organisation of the event, thanking the Consulate General, the Embassy and the diplomatic staff for bringing together Algerians from across Switzerland.
Community members described the celebration as a moment of unity that enabled Algerians from different cantons to meet in a festive national atmosphere while proudly wearing traditional Algerian attire.
Others highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening ties between the diaspora and the homeland, expressing appreciation for the continuous efforts of Algeria’s diplomatic missions to preserve national cohesion abroad.
Showcasing Algeria’s Culture and Craftsmanship
Visitors also praised the presence of Algerian artisans exhibiting traditional jewellery, handicrafts and products reflecting the country’s centuries-old craftsmanship.
Some attendees encouraged Algerians living abroad to invest in Algeria and contribute to its economic development, arguing that the country’s cultural wealth and growing opportunities offer strong reasons to reconnect with the homeland.
A Celebration of Unity and National Identity
Representatives involved in organising Algeria’s legislative elections in Switzerland also acknowledged the role played by the Consulate General in mobilising members of the community and facilitating their participation in the democratic process.
