ALGIERS, July 8 — The Algerian Red Crescent (ARC) has been elected Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) by an absolute majority, marking a further step in the organization’s growing representation within the leadership structures of regional humanitarian institutions.
The election took place during the 50th General Assembly of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, where delegates from member national societies gathered to discuss the organization’s governance and future priorities.
According to the Algerian Red Crescent, the outcome reflects increasing confidence in its role within the Arab humanitarian community and reinforces its contribution to shaping regional strategies for humanitarian relief and emergency response.
The appointment follows the organization’s election to the Executive Board during the previous General Assembly, a development that the Algerian Red Crescent said illustrates the continuity of its expanding engagement in the organization’s decision-making bodies.
The latest election also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, which is headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and serves as the umbrella body for Arab national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies working across humanitarian assistance, disaster response and relief operations.
The Algerian Red Crescent described the appointment as recognition of its sustained participation in regional and international humanitarian initiatives, highlighting its continued commitment to the principles of humanity, volunteerism and solidarity.
It added that the election further consolidates Algeria’s contribution to strengthening Arab humanitarian cooperation and advancing collective efforts to address humanitarian challenges across the region.
