Algeria’s Legislative Campaign Day 18: Parties Call for Strong Voter Turnout to Build a More Effective Parliament

ALGIERS – Political parties campaigning ahead of Algeria’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 2 July used the 18th day of the official campaign on Friday to renew calls for a strong voter turnout, arguing that broad participation is essential to strengthening the National People’s Assembly (APN) and enhancing its ability to represent citizens’ concerns.

Campaign leaders from across the political spectrum emphasised the importance of electoral participation as a means of reinforcing democratic institutions, improving parliamentary oversight, and building stronger links between elected representatives and the public.

Speaking at a rally in Bouira, Workers’ Party (PT) Secretary-General Louisa Hanoune said her party’s participation aimed to address the concerns of citizens and workers while proposing practical solutions to social and economic challenges. She urged voters to support PT candidates, whom she described as having been selected on the basis of credibility and transparency.

From Mila, National Democratic Rally (RND) Secretary-General Monder Bouden stressed the significancegislative institution.

Addressing supporters in Tizi Ouzou, Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) President Abdelali Hassani Cherif called for broad participation in order to elect a strong parliament, describing elections as an essential mechanism for reinforcing trust between citizens and public institutions.

In El Tarf, El Wassit Essiyassi President Ahmed Laroussi Rouibat said the elections offered an opportunity to strengthen confidence between citizens and elected institutions, urging his party’s candidates to place public concerns at the centre of their parliamentary work.

Meanwhile, Tajamou Amel El Djazair (TAJ) President Fatima Zohra Zerouati, speaking in El Bayadh, described the legislative elections as an important milestone in reinforcing trust between citizens and their elected representatives.

At campaign events in Sétif, Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) President Atmane Mazouz encouraged voters to participate in large numbers and elect experienced and competent candidates, saying his party’s programme contained proposals aimed at improving parliamentary performance and addressing citizens’ priorities.

Also speaking in Sétif, Party of Liberty and Justice (PLJ) President Djamel Benziadi said high voter participation and the election of qualified representatives constituted a national responsibility. He urged candidates to avoid making unrealistic campaign promises, stressing that every vote carries significant responsibility.

Campaigning in Labiodh Sidi Cheikh, Future Front (El-Moustakbal Front) President Fateh Boutbig said the next parliament should play an active role in supporting Algeria’s ongoing reform process and advancing the country’s long-term development agenda, arguing that strengthening Parliament’s institutional role remained a central objective of the elections.

In Bouira, El Fadjr El Djadid President Tahar Benbaibeche encouraged citizens, particularly young voters, to participate actively in the elections and provide newly elected representatives with the opportunity to address public concerns.

At a meeting in El Eulma, Ennahda Movement Secretary-General Mohamed Douibi said his party had fielded candidates with diverse professional backgrounds, including doctors, engineers and physicians, whom he described as capable of making a qualitative contribution to the future National People’s Assembly. He also appealed for strong electoral participation.

Concluding the day’s campaign activities in Sétif, Socialist Forces Front (FFS) First National Secretary Youcef Aouchiche called for a high turnout to strengthen the legislative institution and enable it to meet the aspirations of the Algerian people.
