Mobile Polling Stations Set Off in Tamanrasset Ahead of Voting for Nomadic Communities
By Dr. Hana Saada
TAMANRASSET – The first mobile polling station caravans designated to serve nomadic communities departed on Saturday afternoon in Algeria’s southern wilaya of Tamanrasset as part of preparations for the legislative elections scheduled for 2 July.
According to the wilaya delegation of the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE), the first convoy departed from the commune of Tazrouk and comprises two mobile polling stations serving more than 5,000 registered voters. In accordance with Algeria’s electoral procedures, voting at these mobile polling stations begins 72 hours before election day to ensure that remote populations can exercise their constitutional right to vote.
One of the caravans will travel more than 1,300 kilometres, while the second will cover nearly 1,200 kilometres across remote desert areas to reach nomadic communities dispersed throughout the region.
ANIE said all necessary human, logistical and organisational resources had been mobilised to ensure the smooth conduct of the voting operation, which is being carried out in the presence of representatives of the competing electoral lists.
Tamanrasset has a total of 29 mobile polling stations where voting begins 72 hours before the official polling day, in addition to 10 other mobile polling stations scheduled to open 48 hours before the nationwide vote.
The wilaya’s electoral register comprises 122,879 voters distributed across 39 polling centres and 263 polling stations. Eight party lists are competing for the two seats allocated to Tamanrasset in Algeria’s People’s National Assembly (APN).
