Ban Ki-moon Hails Algeria’s Pioneering Role in Advancing Sustainable Development and Climate Diplomacy, Praises Green Growth Leadership at High-Level Conference in Algiers
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Former United Nations Secretary-General and President of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Assembly and Board Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday praised Algeria’s “pioneering” role in advancing sustainable development and climate action, describing the country as a strategic actor capable of bridging Africa, the Arab world and the Mediterranean in global environmental governance.
Speaking at a conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships for Green Growth: Addressing the Sustainability Crisis and Deepening International Cooperation in the Face of Climate Change”, Ban Ki-moon said Algeria is “well positioned to play a significant role in global sustainable development efforts” given its diplomatic standing and geographic positioning.
He underlined that climate and development challenges have evolved beyond environmental concerns to become core issues of economic stability, development policy and international security, affecting all societies without exception. In this context, he highlighted Algeria’s capacity to act as a conduit for dialogue and collective action on global climate governance.

Ban Ki-moon commended Algeria’s environmental and development policies, noting its sustained engagement with international partners, including the United Nations system, in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and broader sustainability challenges. He further stressed that the inauguration of the GGGI office in Algiers represents a concrete step toward enhancing coordination and harmonising approaches on green growth and sustainable development priorities.
He also reaffirmed that the institute’s presence in Algeria would strengthen technical cooperation and support the implementation of joint initiatives aimed at advancing the green economy, improving environmental governance and promoting sustainable resource management.
For his part, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lounès Magramane reiterated Algeria’s firm commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), stressing that climate and green growth issues now occupy a central place in global diplomacy. He emphasised that Algeria’s development strategy is anchored in an integrated vision that combines environmental standards with respect for national sovereignty.

Magramane highlighted Algeria’s ongoing energy transition projects, particularly in solar energy and green hydrogen, noting that strategic partnerships remain essential for achieving national and international sustainability objectives.
Ban Ki-moon’s visit comes as Algeria strengthens its integration into global environmental governance frameworks following its accession to the Global Green Growth Institute in 2025. Headquartered in Seoul, the institute supports member states in building technical capacity in green growth policies and sustainable development strategies.
