ALGIERS — Norwegian energy group Equinor has expressed its intention to expand its investments in Algeria, as both sides move to strengthen and broaden their long-standing cooperation in hydrocarbons, energy transition technologies and emissions reduction strategies, following high-level talks in Algiers with Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab.

Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab received Nina Birgitte Koch, Executive Vice President for Africa at Equinor, in a meeting dedicated to assessing the state of cooperation between Sonatrach and Equinor and exploring new avenues for expansion across the oil and gas value chain, including exploration, development and production.

Both parties reviewed the strategic partnership linking Sonatrach and Equinor, notably through flagship projects in Aïn Salah and Aïn Amenas, described as successful models of Algerian–Norwegian energy cooperation. Discussions also focused on future investment opportunities and the strengthening of technical collaboration between the two groups.

The talks further addressed key areas of potential cooperation, including hydrocarbon field development, petrochemicals, environmental protection technologies, and solutions aimed at reducing methane and carbon emissions. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects were highlighted as central mechanisms for lowering the environmental footprint of the oil and gas industry.

Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to improving the investment climate and attracting high-quality foreign investment, underscoring the advantages of the national hydrocarbons law in terms of transparency, legal stability and incentives for international partners. He also stressed opportunities in research, development, training and advanced technology transfer.

For her part, Ms. Koch welcomed the strength of the partnership with Sonatrach and expressed Equinor’s willingness to consolidate its presence in Algeria and expand cooperation with the national hydrocarbons sector. She highlighted priorities including resource optimisation, greenhouse gas emissions reduction and sustainable energy solutions, while praising Algeria as a reliable partner and a key actor in global energy markets.
