LAWRENCE, Kansas – Members of the Algerian community gathered in Lawrence, Kansas, to pay tribute to Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, the Algerian-born officer who was killed while responding to a shooting incident in the Canadian city earlier this week.

Speaking to Dzair Tube correspondent Islam Balbone, several members of the Algerian diaspora from Canada and the United States expressed their condolences to the family of Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, describing him as a respected member of the community known for his integrity, humility, and dedication.

Friends who had travelled from Montreal recalled their longstanding relationship with the officer, describing him as a family man who grew up alongside them and regularly participated in local football tournaments. They urged members of the public to remember him through prayers rather than social media speculation, emphasising that he was widely respected within the Algerian community.

“We grew up together. He was an honest, kind-hearted family man, and everyone who knew him appreciated his character,” one of his friends told Dzair Tube, adding that the large turnout at his funeral reflected the deep respect he commanded among colleagues, relatives, and members of the wider Algerian and Muslim communities in Canada.

Community members also expressed hope that Algeria’s national football team would dedicate a successful performance to Benredouane’s memory, while extending messages of support to his family during this exceptionally difficult period.

Algerian-Americans who had travelled from several U.S. states to support Algeria’s national football team also offered their condolences to Benredouane’s family, describing his death as a profound loss for the Algerian community while highlighting the unity inspired by the national team’s presence in the city.

Long-time Algerian residents of Lawrence said the team’s presence had brought together members of the diaspora from across North America, creating an atmosphere that celebrated Algerian culture, cuisine, and national identity while reinforcing ties within the expatriate community.

American residents also expressed solidarity with Algerian visitors. Speaking to Dzair Tube, local earthworks artist Stan said the community had enthusiastically prepared for the Algerian delegation’s arrival after learning that the team would spend several weeks in the city.

“We all got excited and started learning as much as we could about Algeria,” he said. “We wanted to create something that would help Algerians feel at home here. Seeing families celebrating together, children smiling, and people sharing their culture makes us proud to show a welcoming side of the United States. We hope to remain friends now and in the future.”

According to Montreal police, Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed while protecting residents during an armed intervention in the Côte-des-Neiges district on Monday. Authorities said he had served with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) since 2021.

Canadian media reported that Benredouane was the father of a young child and that his wife is expecting their second child, adding a particularly poignant dimension to the tragedy.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of Benredouane, a civilian, and the suspected gunman. Montreal police described his death as a significant loss for the force, praising his professionalism, commitment, and sense of public duty. Flags were lowered in his honour, and Canadian media reported that he became the first Montreal police officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2002.
