ENAFOR Readies Niger Exploration Well, Deepening Algeria’s Strategic Energy Footprint in the Sahel

Sonatrach subsidiary completes preparations to drill the Kafra Southeast-1 exploratory well in Agadez, highlighting Algeria’s expanding role in Niger’s energy development and South-South cooperation

ALGIERS — Algeria’s National Drilling Company (ENAFOR), a subsidiary of state energy group Sonatrach, has completed the final field preparations and logistical arrangements for the launch of drilling operations at the Kafra Southeast-1 exploratory well in the Agadez region of northern Niger.

The operation marks a significant step in the expansion of Algerian energy companies beyond the country’s borders and underscores Algeria’s broader economic and strategic engagement with its southern neighbour.

The preparations have involved the mobilisation of heavy drilling equipment, workshop components and integrated camp facilities from Hassi Messaoud, more than 2,000 kilometres away, to the exploration site located about 85 kilometres from Algeria’s southern border.

The scale of the mobilisation reflects the logistical challenges of operating in a remote desert environment, where harsh climatic conditions and difficult terrain add complexity to the deployment of large-scale oilfield equipment.

A Strategic Energy Partnership

The planned drilling of the well, which is expected to reach a depth of more than 3,900 metres, represents more than a technical exploration operation. It forms part of efforts to translate the strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger into concrete energy and development projects.

The Kafra basin is regarded as one of the promising hydrocarbon areas in the region, based on positive indicators and preliminary studies conducted by Sonatrach. According to the available assessments cited in connection with the project, the basin is estimated to contain around 5 billion barrels of oil resources, of which approximately 1.5 billion barrels are considered recoverable.

If confirmed through exploration and subsequent development, such resources could provide a major boost to Niger’s hydrocarbons sector and contribute to expanding the country’s future production capacity.

For Algeria, however, the project extends beyond exploration and potential production.

The approach also envisages technology transfer, training and capacity-building for Nigerien personnel in hydrocarbons-related fields, alongside support for the development of specialised laboratories and infrastructure.

Such cooperation reflects Algeria’s long-standing emphasis on South-South partnership, with economic cooperation framed around mutual development, technical expertise and the strengthening of local capabilities rather than dependence on external actors.

ENAFOR Highlights Sonatrach’s International Expertise

ENAFOR’s presence in Niger also highlights the accumulated expertise of Sonatrach’s specialised service companies and their ability to execute complex operations in challenging desert environments.

The company has previously undertaken international activities in several countries, including the Sultanate of Oman, building experience in managing drilling and oilfield operations beyond Algeria’s borders.

The deployment in Niger therefore represents both a new operational challenge and another demonstration of the capacity of Algerian energy companies to export technical expertise and services to African markets.

Algeria’s Energy Role in the Sahel

The launch of the Kafra Southeast-1 drilling operation comes against the backdrop of Algeria’s broader effort to strengthen economic and energy ties with countries across the Sahel and the wider African continent.

For Niger, developing its hydrocarbons resources offers the prospect of expanding domestic energy capacity, creating specialised employment and strengthening the foundations of a more developed national oil and gas industry.

For Algeria, meanwhile, projects of this nature provide an avenue to translate its energy expertise and industrial capabilities into a wider regional role.

The Kafra operation consequently illustrates how energy cooperation can serve as an instrument of broader economic integration, linking Algerian technical expertise with Niger’s natural-resource potential.

At a time when the Sahel faces complex security, economic and geopolitical challenges, Algeria’s expanding involvement in regional energy development also reflects its view that economic integration, capacity-building and sustainable development are closely connected to long-term regional stability.

The preparation of the Kafra Southeast-1 well thus represents a significant operational milestone for ENAFOR and another step in Algeria’s efforts to position its national energy companies as active contributors to the development of the African continent.
