Moroccan Historian Barred From Travel Ahead of Paris Academic Conference, Rights Group Says

BY Dr. Hana Saada

Rabat — Moroccan historian and academic Maati Monjib was prevented from leaving the country on Thursday at Rabat-Salé airport, according to statements from his legal team and a supporting rights committee, which said he had been due to participate in an academic conference in Paris marking the 70th anniversary of the independence of Morocco and Tunisia.

The committee said Monjib, a prominent historian, had completed travel formalities and held a confirmed ticket before being stopped at border controls without being provided with a written explanation for the decision. It added that he briefly staged a sit-in at the airport in protest.

Rights advocates say the case forms part of a broader legal and administrative dispute involving Monjib over the past several years, during which he has faced judicial proceedings, asset restrictions and professional limitations. They argue that the measures have had a cumulative impact on his academic and personal life.

Monjib has previously denied wrongdoing in related cases and has publicly criticised what he describes as restrictions on his freedom of movement and expression.

The incident has renewed scrutiny from local and international human rights organisations regarding due process guarantees and freedom of movement in Morocco, though authorities have not issued an official public statement addressing the latest travel restriction.
