Two senior United States officials, Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State, and General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM), arrived in Algeria on Monday for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across security, economic and regional stability frameworks.

According to a statement from the US Embassy in Algiers, the two officials are scheduled to meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Mines and Mining Industries Mourad Hanifi, Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion Kamel Rezig, and Army Chief of Staff General Saïd Chanegriha. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation and advancing joint efforts in support of regional stability, security and economic prosperity.

This marks Christopher Landau’s first visit to Algeria in his current capacity. His talks with Algerian officials will centre on strengthening bilateral relations and broadening commercial and economic partnerships, with particular attention to opportunities in the energy, mining and other strategic sectors considered mutually beneficial.

The US delegation also signalled an interest in cultural engagement, noting that Landau will visit the historic Casbah of Algiers to highlight Algeria’s cultural and historical heritage.

General Anderson is also undertaking his first official visit to Algeria in his role as AFRICOM commander. His agenda focuses on reinforcing security cooperation with Algerian counterparts, particularly in relation to counterterrorism and evolving regional threats.

A key element of his programme includes laying a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Algiers, in tribute to Algeria’s historical struggle and the National War of Liberation.

Talks between General Anderson and President Tebboune are expected to address counterterrorism coordination, responses to shifting security dynamics in the Sahel, and broader efforts to enhance cooperation against transnational threats.

The US Embassy stated that the visits reflect Washington’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Algeria and advancing shared objectives of security and economic cooperation.
